The latest Star Trek series has begun production! The cast of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds announced via a charming video that their show is filming as of last week. Stars Anson Mount (Captain Christopher Pike), Rebecca Romijn (Number One), and Ethan Peck (Science Officer Spock) were joined by five new cast members, who took turns reciting the mission of the starship Enterprise—with emphasis on “strange new worlds.”
They all seem so genuinely excited that it makes waiting for this show even harder.
Mount, Romijn, and Peck, who all appeared on Star Trek: Discovery, are joined by five actors whose characters are as yet unknown: Melissa Navia (Dietland), Celia Rose Gooding (Broadway’s Jagged Little Pill), Christina Chong (Dominion), Babs Olusanmokun (The Defenders), and Jess Bush (Home and Away).
Strange New Worlds is set in the era when Pike captained the Enterprise, before it became the ship famously led by Captain James T. Kirk. The behind-the-scenes team shares a lot of talent with the other current Trek shows: Akiva Goldsman (creator of Picard and a writer and producer on Discovery) serves as co-showrunner and wrote and directed the premiere episode of Strange New Worlds, which has a story by Goldsman, Discovery showrunner Alex Kurtzman (who oversees the Trek franchise for CBS), and Discovery executive producer Jenny Lumet.
Goldsman’s co-showrunner is Henry Alonso Myers, who previously worked as a producer and writer on The Magicians.
On a panel last fall, Goldsman explained that Strange New Worlds will be a bit more episodic than the other current shows, with character rather than plot arcs. But it’s still not quite clear when we’ll get to hang out with these characters—no release date has been announced for the show’s debut on Paramount+.
